What is Ephedrine
HCL?
Ephedrine HCL is a synthetic form of ephedrine typically sold over the counter as a bronchodilator. Ephedra, which is naturally occurring ephedrine generally derived from Mahuang, is typically used in dietary supplements for weight loss. Ephedrine HCL, on the other hand, is generally used as an oral decongestant. Moreover, when the FDA banned ephedra, they did not include Ephedrine HCL products, such as Vasopro, in the ban so long as the products are not marketed for any form of dietary uses.
Despite the fact that Ephedrine HCL is sold as an over the counter decongestant, many people use it as a dietary supplement. Products such as Vasopro contain 200mg of Guaifeniesin, while others, such as Kaizen contain 8mg of pure ephedrine HCL. Many people combine ephedrine HCL with caffeine pills and aspirin for a full ECA stack where they can control the amount of each stack ingredient themselves.

In
addition, the FDA considered additional recent studies
confirming that ephedra use raises blood pressure and otherwise
stresses the circulatory system. In February 2003, the agency
solicited public comments regarding ephedra's side effects and
whether ephedra-containing dietary supplements pose a
"significant or unreasonable risk of illness or
injury."
